ELMHURST TEACHERS TO RECEIVE CHILDREN’S POETRY STORYBOX ON FEB. 28TH AT THE ILLINOIS WRITING PROJECT’S WRITING CONFERENCE.
Elmhurst, IL: Edison Elementary teachers, Becky D’ Angelo, Nancy Galas and Mary Greska will be recipients of the Children’s Poetry StoryBox. The StoryBox project is an international arts and literacy initiative created in 1995 by Kevin Cordi, a professional storyteller and a professor of education at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus Ohio. The project promotes the art of sharing stories and storytelling, and has elicited stories from more than a million people. You can learn more about the project at www.storyboxproject.com .
“Kids need to experience poetry and see the joy that comes from working with poetry,” Cordi said. “These nationally renowned poets are sharing their work and inviting kids to co-create with them. These children can now say they’ve written a poem with a famous poet.” Poets who’ve contributed unfinished works for the Children’s Poetry StoryBox Project include: Kate Coombs, Betsy Franco, Helen Frost, Charles Ghigna, Joan Bransfield Graham, Nikki Grimes, Avis Harley, David Harrison, Sara Holbrook Georgia Heard, X.J. Kennedy, George Ella Lyon, J. Patrick Lewis, Kenn Nesbitt, Michael Salinger, Sonya Sones, April Halprin Wayland, Allan Wolf, Janet Wong and Jane Yolen.
After its time at Edison the teachers will ship the poems to the next location somewhere in the United States, where children and adults will have the opportunity to complete poems and contribute to the collection. The box will return to Columbus in 2015.
